If you're worried about animal suffering, there are some kinds of seafood that are probably better than most land meats, or even most fish. Mussels, oysters, clams, and scallops don't have the same sort of nervous systems as vertebrates like fish, birds, and mammals, and don't exhibit many human characteristics. Whether that means they can't suffer is a subject of some debate, so think carefully.
But if you're a vegetarian because you're opposed to killing animals for food, there's really no way to squirm out. If killing a steer (or a cod) isn't something you can condone, it's not much of an excuse to say, "I only did it every now and again."

In the same way, 'teetotaler' is a word with a dictionary definition, and someone who avoids all alcohol except for vodka isn't a teetotaler.
People who eat fish but call themselves vegetarians can actually make things quite difficult for vegetarians; restaurants, caterers and private individuals often offer a fish dish as the 'vegetarian option' , because in the past they have had clients or guests who called themselves vegetarians and ate fish

"Pescatarian" is just a stupid label to make "vegetarians" who want to eat fish feel better about themselves.

There are no set rules of what you can and can't eat.. So if you really wanted to eat fish and are vegetarian.. no one is going to stop you.
If you are a strict vegetarian with no exceptions then no, you shouldn't be eating fish.

Vegetarians, by true definition, do not eat animals but can eat their by-products (like eggs, milk, honey etc.)

If you want to eat fish or seafood once in a blue moon, go ahead but you're not a vegetarian.

If you choose to eat seafood, you are a pescatarian.

But it's annoying when people eat fish and say they are "vegetarian." What's wrong with having a word with a clear meaning?
